GRANDE SERTÃO: GONZAGA project is the convergence of the musical work of Luiz Gonzaga with the Brazilian literacy classic “Grande Sertão: Veredas”, by Guimarães Rosa. In this blend of universes, the singular Carol Andrade’s voice and the Alex Maia’s sophisticated acoustic guitar multiply into original arrangements and enchanting performances to take listeners on an emotional and special journey through the “big sertão” of each individual. The duo of Carol Andrade (voice) and Alex Maia (acoustic guitar) began their musical journey in 1997. Their debut album - “Vida Adentro” - was released in 2005. In 2013, Carol Andrade launched her first solo album called “Outras Mulheres” (Other Women), dedicated to Brazilian women songwriters from Brazil, arranged and produced by Alex Maia. That concert was held in several Brazilian cities culminating to their first European Tour, in 2014. In 2016, Carol Andrade released another solo album titled “Sorria” (Smile) - also produced by Alex Maia - featuring her original compositions, which received acclaim by prominent Brazilian jazz singer, Rosa Passos. Reuniting as a duo in 2018, they celebrated their 20-year musical journey and life in two launching “Canção pra dois” (Song for two) followed by performances in many cultural venues across Brazil and two European tours around Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands. Following the challenges of the COVID 19 pandemic, Carol and Alex resumed touring in 2022 with an European tour featuring a free concert called “Debaixo do barro do chão”(Under the mud of the ground) in Belgium, Switzerland and Germany. In the same year, Carol Andrade launched “O fio da vida” (The thread of life), another album with her original songs, produced by Alex. In 2024, Carol Andrade and Alex Maia embarked on their latest project “Grande Sertão: Gonzaga”, an interpretative work with songs by Luiz Gonzaga - the most famous accordionist, singer and songwriter from the northeast of Brazil - intertwined with the literary works of the great writer Guimarães Rosa. This project, deeply rooted in Brazilian culture, encompasses a diverse range of rhythms and evokes special family memories.
