DescriptionVarvara Gyra was born in Greece and has been living in Paris, France, since 1998. She performs a repertory including works from 16th to the 21st century and is especially interested in Baroque, Latin-American, Mediterranean, Spanish and contemporary Music. She enjoys singing, particularly as it provides her the opportunity to communicate with the audience in five different languages. She studied the guitar in Paris with Roland Dyens and Francis Kleynjans, graduated from the Ecole Normale de Paris and has been awarded scholarships by the Academy of Athens and the Onassis Foundation. She holds a Ph. D. in Musicology (University of Paris VIII) and wrote her thesis on the work of the Greek 20th century composer Jani Christou. She has recorded three CDs, won four international prizes and performed in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland. She collaborated with Charlotte Rampling on a two-year tour where she created and performed music to accompany poetry by Cavafy. She has also worked with Anouk Aimée, Lluis Homar and Lambert Wilson.
