DescriptionJUAN CARLOS CACERES proposes a new formula of the inexhaustible theme of tango. « GOTANSWING » is a project that brings the jazz origins of tango back to the surface. Tango and jazz stem from the same tree.
There was an interface between the original tango and ragtime, for both were savored in the brothels of Buenos Aires. Ragtime melodies by Scott Joplin were popular at the time and black musicians like Harold Phillips, Jelly Roll Morton and W. Handy would alternate tango and ragtime music on both sides of the Rio de la Plata and in New Orleans. Consequently jazz and tango musicians met in Paris and New York and influenced each other. As an example one can mention El Gato Barbieri, Paquito de Rivera, and Astor Piazolla working with Gerry Mulligan and Gary Barton. And so, in Gotan Swing to the tango, milonga, candomble and murga - styles specific to the River Plate region - are added Swing, Dixieland and the Charleston, among many other influences, which is not surprising since Cáceres was once a jazz trombonist in existentialist Buenos Aires. As his fans know, he is also a pianist, singer, composer, painter, art teacher and lecturer on Argentine history.
