The bouzouki as we know the instrument nowadays appears in Greek discography in the '30ies. But the history of the bouzouki goes way further back. There are references to predecessors of the contemporary bouzouki at least as of 1830. If we search further down we arrive at the ancient Greek 'Pandouris', considered by many researchers as the ancestor of the modern bouzouki. This concert is about the high times of the bouzouki presence in Greek music, between 1930 and 1960. These years are full of virtuosi bouzouki players, who in many cases were also extraordinary composers. Instrumentally the bouzouki defines the period of rebetiko music, being its main protagonist. The story starts with Giovan Tsaous and his special instrument ( a non-diatonic bouzouki with modifiable fret positions), then followed by the old three-string bouzoukis as used by Markos Vamvakaris and other composers before the war. Consequently the more popular three-string bouzoukis played by virtuosi magicians of the instrument take over. Often these magicians are also very impressive composers, as Giorgos Zambetas and Manolis Hiotis, who brought the bouzouki to its top moments.
