Out to Lunch is a fine arts tribute to jazz musicians, and mainly to the great bebop-pioneers who have passed away. Art-Base curator Dimi Dumo, an artist himself and a great amateur of jazz, gathered around him three colleague-artists, all of whom have made a series of works around jazz.
Geert Nys is known for his new pop art paintings, and his portraits of jazz heroes have previously been on show at the Blue Note Jazz festival. His works were exposed in many galleries, even as far as Osaka (Japan) and Atlanta (USA).
Jos Caes is a graphic artist, whose silkscreen prints have an almost physical directness. His love for jazz music is a long lasting story. He cherishes the brush and ink, and uses them in an expressionist style to create very controlled compositions.
For Paul Horemans, jazz has been the main theme in his work for decades. He grew up in a house that was stuffed with his father's vinyl bebop records. No wonder he later used his graphic talent to portray Miles, Chet, Monk and Coltrane over and over again, first in prints, and more recently in a series of drawings. The realism of these portraits is absolutely striking.
Dimi Dumo, for whom a common bar of soap has become a loyal companion in his artistic expression, is proud to show some of his newer work next to that of these dedicated artists.
The people attending the opening of the exhibition will witness a special performance by saxophone and flute soloist Philippe Laloy, who will improvise in correspondence with the art works on display.
