BRUCHORÕES- Choros de Bruxelles

Description

Bruchorões, is the “Bru ” of Brussels, this city full of live and different cultures, and “chorões”, which is the name given to the choro players, a musical genre forming the heart of one of the richest Brazilian musical traditions.
This music, essentially instrumental and virtuoso, was born at the end of the XIXth century, and underwent the musical influences of European ballroom dances (waltz, scottish, polka…), but also of afro-brazilian rhythms (lundu…). Just like jazz, the choro is therefore a fundamentally mixed and colorful music, based on refined harmonies as well as complex and syncopated beats. This rich Brazilian musical heritage represents of the origins of the samba, the bossa-nova, and inspired many classical composers (Hettor Villa-Lobos…) as well as jazz players passionate with new musical horizons.
The traditional choro ensemble, known as “conjunto regional”, generally comprises five to six musicians. The melody is most often played by the bandolim (the Brazilian mandolin), the flute or the clarinet. The accompaniment is handled by one or two guitars, one of six and the other of seven strings (the “sete cordas”), whose improvised contrapuntal bass lines represent one of the most distinctive features of this musical genre. The cavaquinho, little guitar of the ukulele family, is used as rhythmic accompaniment and sometimes as melodic instrument. The main percussion instrument is the pandeiro, type of tambourine, whose play rich in timbre contrasts neatly combines the high and hail sound of the metal plates (“platinelas”) and the deep tones of the stretched skin.
« Les Bruchorões » invite you to a journey in this complex world full of emotions through the interpretation of several great composers such as Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Ernesto Nazareth, Hermeto Pascoal (…), but will also present you some of their own compositions.

Guy Buyse : Bandolim, David Bauman : pandeiro, Sylvain Boisvert : transverse flutes
Matteo Carola : cavaquinho and guitar, Pierre Gevaert : seven-strings classical guitar
