Our concert will focus on a traditional Sicilian repertoire,
paying attention both to old and more recent tunes belonging to the island.
We will sing very ancient chants passed down by the very first recordings on the field by Alan Lomax and Diego Carpitella in the Fifties, such as work songs: carter and shepherd songs, as well as most commonly known instrumental tarantellas. We will also focus on devotional songs, specially polyphonic chants of the Holy week, rosarys and songs of the Passion.
The performance will also deal with the more recent rediscovery of traditional Sicilian music, made possible from the Sixties by singers and researchers Rosa Balistreri and Otello Profazio. Along many others, they are responsible for the revival of sicilian traditional music heritage.
We will therefore go through Rosa Balistreri’s and Proazio’s rediscovered waltzes, songs of love and disdain, lullabies and tarantellas, all accompanied by traditional instruments. With our musical performance we will give a varied and deep insight on the Island’s roots, sharing the grandeur that Sicily had, and still has, through its music and songs.
