PLIRI NTAXEI- LE RÉBÉTIKO AUJOURD’HUI

Description

Pliri Ntaxei was formed in March 2012 in Thessaloniki by Lefteris
Tsikouridis.

The band members share a strong interest in interpreting and performing
songs and instrumental tunes from the rich Greek traditional music and
from rebetiko music recorded between 1910 and 1930.

The band has four voices, bouzouki, guitar and baglama, a standard folk
music band. This type of bands appeared in the 1930’s playing own
compositions based on traditional musical forms.

The group studies and uses specific techniques in musical expression,
interpretation and performing, which relate mainly to the traditional
style such as vocal tone colours, holding the drone, specific tuning
scales (douzeni), etc.

Pliri Ntaxei’s sound is based on the traditional style of rebetiko during
the interwar period as recorded in that era’s discography.

The desire to document that idiom led the band to record three LP’s with
their own newly composed songs.

During their performances the repertoire consists of songs from their LP’s
as well as traditional old rebetiko songs.

Katerina Douka – vocals, spoons & zilia (clappers),
Manolis Porfirakis – guitar & vocals,
Lefteris Tsikouridis – bouzouki & vocals,
Christos Pappas – bouzouki, baglama & vocals.
