On Saturday, November 7th, 2015, we will take you on a journey to Ikaria, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. The band "O Ollandos kai i parea tou" (The Dutchman and his friends), will be in Brussels for the first time to introduce you to the idyllic and Dionysiac atmosphere of the Ikarian village festival.
The group consists of:
Nikos Plakas ‘Ollandos’: violin and vocals
Kostas Kalogridis: lute, bouzouki, vocals
Charis Karapetis: guitar, bouzouki, vocals
Nikos was raised in the Netherlands having roots from the island. He has been living on Ikaria for many years now, like the rest of the group. The trio is often found at the village festivals, which are organized frequently on the Greek island by the village associations to raise money for local charities. The atmosphere at the festivals is like the music itself; exuberant, cheerful and stimulating to dance along with the local residents. The genres mainly being played are "Nisiotika", music of the Greek islands, but also other Greek music such as Laika and Rebetiko. European tangos and waltzes have also been a popular part of the repertoire since the 50s. Obviously there is no Ikarian village festival without the "Ikariotikos", the dance of the Island. Local people dance passionately to this magical Dionysian melody while enjoying the Ikarian wine.
And that's exactly what we will be doing on Saturday, November 7th!

Le samedi 7/11/2015 nous vous amenons a l'île grecque de Ikaria dans la mer Égée.
L'ensemble 'O Ollandos kai i pareatou' ( Le violoniste Néerlandais et sa bande) nous rejoint pour la première fois à Bruxelles et vous introduira dans l'atmosphère idyllique et Dionysiaque des fêtes populaires de son île.
Membres de l'ensemble:
Nikos Plakas 'Ollandos': violon et voix
Kostas Kalogridis: luth, bouzouki, voix
Haris Karapetis: guitare, bouzouki, voix
Nikos Plakas a grandi aux Pays Bas mais il a son origine dans l'île de Ikaria. Il y habite, comme les autres membres du groupe, depuis des années. L'ensemble joue souvent aux fêtes de village, qui sont organisées fréquemment dans l'île par les associations des habitants des villages pour récolter des fonds qui financeront des actions philanthropiques et locales.
L'atmosphère de ces fêtes est comme leur musique: joyeuse et enivrante, et elle invite tous a participer a la danse avec la population locale.
Les genres musicaux des fêtes populaires consistent en 'Nisiotika'( chansons des îles), et Laika et Rebetiko. Également depuis les années '50 les tangos et walses européennes sont une partie populaire du répertoire. Mais évidemment il n'y a pas de fête de village ikariote sans le 'Icarioticos' cad la danse de l'ile.
Avec le gout du vin ikariote dans la bouche la population locale danse la mélodie magique et Dionysiaque de l' Ikariotikos' avec beaucoup de passion.
Et voilà ce que nous allons faire tous ensemble le 7/11!
A bientôt donc a la fête de village Ikariote a Bruxelles!

Op zaterdag 7 november 2015 nemen we u mee naar Ikaria, een Grieks eiland in de Egeïsche zee. De formatie “O Ollandos kai i parea tou” (De Nederlander en zijn gezelschap) is voor het eerst in Brussel om u kennis te laten maken met de idyllische en Dionysische sfeer van de Ikariaanse dorpsfeesten.
De groep bestaat uit:
Nikos Plakas ‘Ollandos’: viool en zang
Kostas Kalogridis: luit, bouzouki, zang
Charis Karapetis: gitaar, bouzouki, zang
Nikos is opgegroeid in Nederland en afkomstig van het eiland. Hij woont er, net als de rest van de groep, sinds jaar en dag. Het drietal is vaak te vinden op de dorpsfeesten, die op het Griekse eiland veelvuldig georganiseerd worden door de dorpsverenigingen, om geld te verzamelen voor goede en lokale doelen. De sfeer op de feesten is als de muziek zelf, uitbundig, vrolijk en uitnodigend om mee te dansen met de lokale bewoners. De genres die voornamelijk gespeeld worden zijn “Nisiotika”, muziek van de Griekse eilanden, maar ook andere Griekse muziekgenres zoals Laika en Rebetiko. Europese tango’s en walsen zijn sinds de jaren ’50 eveneens een populair onderdeel van het repertoire. Uiteraard is er geen sprake van een Ikariaans dorpsfeest zonder de “Ikariotiko”, de dans van het eiland. Onder het genot van de Ikariaanse wijn wordt er door de lokale bevolking hartstochtelijk op deze magische dionysische melodie gedanst.
En dat is precies wat de op zaterdag 7 november gaan doen!

ABOUT THE WINE WE WILL DRINK ON THE PANIGYRI, IKARIA 'PRAMIAN':
Ikaria has ancient and close ties with wine. In the Homeric Odes both Drakanos and “the island of Ikarus” are mentioned as the birthplace of the wine-god Dionysos. The Pramnian Wine (mount Pramnos of Ikaria) was the famous wine of antiquity.
It is mentioned in the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey” of Homer, in the “Iona” and “Republic” of Plato, in the “Knights” of Aristophanes, in the “Idyllics” of Theokritos, in Apollodoros and others.
Ikarian wine is offered as a therapeutic drink or as a “mixture” of barley-flour, honey and goat cheese, all basic products of the Ikarian earth. Aristophanes mentions the spirit of Pramnian Wine, for which you need to be relaxed to enjoy.
Even today in old Ikarian houses there are clay jars buried in the ground as a Homeric reminder.
