INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL- CONCERT 1

Pandit Ashok Pathak is a global top class sitar player. His father Pandit Balaram Pathak was a legendary figure in classical Indian music and Ravi Shankar mentioned his grandfather Pandit Rameshwar Pathak as an important source of inspiration.
One can recognize the Pathak family style( Pathak Gharana) in the specifically soft and silky sound, in the innovative sitar technique, and in the far reaching expansion of 'meend', ie very beautiful but difficult string glissandos produced by moving the strings up and down in one and the same fret position. Also the Pathak family has a very profound knowledge of traditional compositions. Pandit Ashok Pathak is mostly known for his interpretations of traditional Indian music, but he is not afraid of experimenting with other styles of music.
Tabla accompaniment will be done by no less than Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, known as one of the greatest tabla players from India. He played with most of the broadly known Indian musicians, and had thirty years of training under the famous Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh. Today, Anindo leads his generation of representatives of the Farrukhabad Gharana of tabla founded by Haji Vilayat Khan Sahib. Apart from being one of the greatest performers, Anindo also belongs to the most important tabla builders and teachers and researchers. Anindo's performances are marked by clarity of tone, very crisp and clear bols and an intuitive sense of rhythm and melody.
Assisting a concert with these two great masters surely is an unforgettable experience. The power of good Indian classical music lies within the capacity to improvise, i.e. to create a new musical form in the here and now, within the rules of the raga (melodic structure) and the tala (rhythmical cycle).
