A word about Yiannis Efstathopoulos

Yiannis Efstathopoulos is specialised in historical guitars and he is a Doctor in the Arts at the
Vrije Universiteit /Koniniklijk Conservatorium Brussel. His research is dedicated to early 20th
guitar performance practice and he brings backs in light the forgotten Spanish repertoire
related to the Generation ’27. His first album Seis Caprichos for Passacaille records (2019) is
a result of a long research path in libraries, archives, museums and experimentation with
original instruments on gut strings.
His first diplomas in Greece were obtained at the University of Macedonia-Music Science
and Arts and at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki with soloists Elena Papandreou and
Thanos Mitsalas. Coming in Belgium he completed two Masters: on classical guitar and on
early plucked instruments at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel with professors Antigoni
Goni and Xavier Diaz-Latorre. In 2016 he had the privilege to take lessons with Carles Trepat
and then in 2017 to be invited by him to the recreation of the the historical ensemble “Lira
Orfeu Miquel Llobet” for the tribute of “Antonio de Torres-200 years” in Seu Vella of Lleida-
Spain.
From 2014 to 2021 Yiannis worked at Brussels’ Conservatory as an artistic researcher and
guitar assistant while during 2019-2021 he also taught Historical informed Performance
Practice for classical guitarists. Since 2017 he has being collaborating as guitar tutor and
pedagogue and the Dulcinea Project of Cervantes Institute Brussels and this year he also
teaches at the Stedelijk Conservatorium Brugge.
His concert activity includes solo recitals in UK, France, Spain, Belgium, Austria and Greece
and as lecturer he has participated in several conferences about guitar research in Belgium,
Spain, Australia, UK and Hong-Kong.
He plays on a guitar by Telesforo Julve made in 1926 and by modern luthiers such as
Christopher Dean and Dirk De Hertogh.
