EDUARDO ROVIRA: THE OTHER PIAZZOLLA? BY SONICO

Description

Astor Piazzolla is known as the inventor of modern tango. But is this true? Was Piazzolla the only figure of this movement, or were there others? Sonico celebrates the repertoire of the unjustly forgotten Argentinian composer Eduardo Rovira. Rovira is thought of as the “other Piazzolla” because of his fundamental role in the creation of the contemporary tango during the Buenos Aires avant-garde the early 50’s.
Rovira is an extremely different musician from Piazzolla. While both creative searches were connected to the past, they ultimately followed different paths. Piazzolla may be known as the vanguard of modern tango, but now is the time for Rovira to be in the spotlight. Indeed, we can call Rovira the avant-garde after the avant-garde of tango...

WE ARE SONICO!!! In April 2015, the Argentinian bass player Ariel Eberstein decided to take part in the Brussels Tango Festival. He was surprised to find his colleague American violinist Stephen Meyer - with whom he had collaborated in countless productions at the national Belgian
opera house, De Munt/La Monnaie - at the festival as well. Astor Piazzolla and Eduardo Rovira came up over the course of a conversation with Stephen, followed by an immediate plan to create a group together focused on Rovira’s music. Another participant of the festival was the talented French Chilean bandoneon player Lysandre Donoso, also leader of the orquesta tipica Silbando.

When Lysandre heard the name Rovira, he was immediately convinced that he’d like to play as well. However, the harmonic and rhythmical foundation was missing, and was found through the playing of former Soledad guitar player, the Belgian Patrick de Schuyter.
He closed the circle, the multifaceted Sonico was born.

SONICO is:

Lysandre Donoso - Bandoneon
Stephen Meyer - Violin
Patrick de Schuyter -Guitar
Ariel Eberstein - Double bass
